New space education partnership aims to inspire Australia’s next generation

A new national partnership is set to expand access to space and STEM education for Australian students, with a strong focus on real-world career pathways and regional inclusion.

One Giant Leap Australia and SpacePort Australia have joined forces to launch the Space Science School: Engagement, Education, Academic to Manufacturing initiative — known as the Triple S AtoM (SSS-AtoM©) project.

The collaboration aims to strengthen STEM education across the country, particularly in rural and remote communities, while connecting classroom learning with the skills needed for future careers in the rapidly growing space and advanced technology sectors.

Dr Gabrielle Caswell said renewed global interest in human spaceflight had sparked a shift in how young people view careers in space. With missions such as Artemis II capturing attention worldwide, she believes the next generation is increasingly inspired to see space as a viable pathway.

“The world is now on mission,” Dr Caswell said, pointing to forecasts of significant growth in the global space economy over the coming decade.

The initiative comes as Australia faces a projected shortfall in STEM capability, with demand for skilled professionals in areas such as robotics, coding, navigation and space medicine expected to surge. Industry estimates suggest more than 10,000 workers will be needed to meet near-future workforce demands.

Through the SSS-AtoM© project, One Giant Leap Australia plans to double the reach of its existing programs while expanding into new areas including film, arts and design — recognising the importance of creativity, communication and mental resilience in future space exploration.

The program also reflects lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic, when isolation highlighted the importance of mental health and human connection — factors expected to play a critical role in long-duration space missions.

Dr Caswell noted the increasing role of commercial players such as SpaceX and Blue Origin in shaping the future of space exploration, and said Australia’s next generation would be key to building the nation’s capabilities in the sector.

“You never know which child will go on to create Australia’s next breakthrough,” she said.

The partnership will also strengthen connections between education providers, industry, and research organisations, giving students greater exposure to real-world STEM environments and emerging career opportunities.
