Families across the northern Gold Coast can look forward to expanded specialist education options, with early construction works officially underway on a brand-new special school for the Coomera-Pimpama community.
Slated to open for day one of the school year in 2028, the new facility will support students from Prep to Year 6 with an initial capacity for 162 children. Located on Old Coach Road in Upper Coomera—directly adjoining Coomera Springs State School—the campus will deliver much-needed enrolment relief for existing schools across the fast-growing northern corridor.
The project is being delivered by the Queensland Government as part of a $2.3 billion investment in 22 new schools statewide, which includes nine new special schools.

Modern, purpose-built facilities for young learners
Designed specifically around students’ learning, development, and wellbeing, the school will provide contemporary learning environments tailored to diverse physical and sensory needs.
Stage 1 construction, managed by ADCO Constructions, will include:
- 27 dedicated learning spaces, including specialist learning areas
- A multi-purpose hall and resource centre
- Outdoor learning areas and purpose-designed play spaces
- Student and staff amenities, administration facilities, and a canteen
- Safe transport access, featuring a dedicated car park and bus pick-up and drop-off zone
Meeting surging demand across the northern corridor
The new school addresses a substantial increase in local demand, with enrolments across Queensland special schools climbing by 47 per cent since 2019.
Coomera State Special School Principal Kate Hucker noted that the new facilities will ensure local children can access specialised education closer to home.
“We have seen strong and sustained growth in demand for special schooling in this region, reflecting the rapid growth of local communities and the increasing need for specialist education options close to home,” Ms Hucker said.
“A new special school at Coomera-Pimpama will help meet that demand and give more families access to the tailored support, specialised learning environments and inclusive opportunities their children need to thrive.”
ADCO Constructions Queensland State Manager James Prattent added that the focus is on creating a supportive, welcoming environment for families from the ground up.
“This is an important new special school for the Coomera-Pimpama community,” Mr Prattent said. “This project will create contemporary, inclusive learning environments designed to support the diverse needs of students and provide a safe, functional and welcoming school for families and staff.”
The new Coomera-Pimpama special school is scheduled to welcome its foundation students in 2028.
